Something fictional.

The Mockingbird Hunter. That a cat would stand in the way of their divorce was unimaginable. Over a dog they might have fought viciously for custody. But over a cat, and this cat specifically? No. Neither of them was taking that goddammed feline, not for any amount of money or stock or property or apology. … Continue reading Something fictional. →

The maidenhair tree.

Juliet left school, through the 8th grade double doors, on Tuesday at 3:52, according to the big, round clock in the hallway. Her last class, English, had ended early, at 2:55, when Mrs. Wimmer had grabbed Catherine, caught passing a vulgar note, and marched wordlessly to the principal’s office. They had sat at their desks … Continue reading The maidenhair tree. →

From 4th grade to college, in a blink.
Several years ago a friend (who’s a little younger than I am) asked me to lunch. After a little chit-chatting, they got to the point: “I want to know how you reinvented yourself, because I want to do that, too.” I didn’t have a solid answer, other than to say it was an ongoing process. As I look ahead to life without children at home, and back on a decade of writing at jennyslark dot com, it seems I’ve been exploring that topic - reinvention - for most of the time I’ve been writing. This month, I’m looking a little closer, and with more specific intention. Here’s a sampling of the cover art I’ve made for the posts, all of which you’ll find on the blog (link in bio).
What a beautiful day for some fun in the sun
I R-E-L-I-S-H Sunday morning time, reading, and fig season. More about all of that on jennyslark dot com (but not too much more, because it’s Sunday). Happy Sunday.
Sometimes it goes this way instead. #dontwannaplay
Thirty seconds earlier, before I swung my feet out of bed and stepped on the floor, they were snuggled tight, back to back, sound asleep.
